But this wasn’t a fantasy novel. This was real life. -Tales from Lovecraft Middle School #1
Tales from Lovecraft Middle School #1: Professor Gargoyle is a novel by Charles Gilman. Robert’s town is redistricted, forcing him to go to Lovecraft Middle School, leaving behind all his friends. Lovecraft Middle School is brand new and full of all the new technology and some of the best teachers. This opportunity, while daunting, is hard to pass up. What could possibly go wrong?
“This is getting stranger and stranger. I’m starting to wish you’d just let those tentacles carry me away.” -Tales from Lovecraft Middle School #1
This really wasn’t as enthralling as I was hoping it would be. I think the morphing cover gave me unrealistic expectations. This book wasn’t horrible by any means, I was just wanting more from the story. I was slightly disappointed that the science-fiction really didn’t pick up until the second half of the book. I do understand that this was the first in the series and that this was setting up an entire world, but I felt it moved a bit slow for my liking. While I didn’t enjoy this book as much, I think elementary school kids would really enjoy this. It touches into H. P. Lovecraft and the science fiction world in a way that won’t overwhelm them and turn them away from the genre. I feel as if science fiction and fantasy get a bad rep for being nerdy and un-cool, so this is a big plus for me. Also, this could encourage kids to read more difficult text, for example, something from H. P. Lovecraft.
The last things Robert saw were the horns on top of his head, disappearing into the inky black vortex. -Tales from Lovecraft Middle School #1
While the first book was a bit boring, I will be reading the rest of the series. I think there is much more to come in this world and that the adventures will only get better. I have a good feeling about this eerie series.. Or maybe it is because Halloween is lingering around the corner? On another note, these books are a quick read for adults. I managed to read three books in the series in a single afternoon! It’s definitely a fun and fast read.
Warning: There are spoilers for future books in the series
